How do the NBA draft and free agency work?

With the Celtics' 2024 championship clinched, the NBA offseason is officially underway. The2024 NBA draftand free agency are next up on the league's calendar.



Here's a look at what's ahead for the NBA.



When is the 2024 NBA draft?



The draft will be held June 26-27. The first round will air on June 26 at 8 p.m. ET via ABC, ESPN and ESPN+. The second round will air on June 27 at 4 p.m. ETvia ABC, ESPN and ESPN+.



Where is the 2024 NBA draft?



The draft will be held in New York. The first night will take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The second night will be held at ESPN's Seaport District Studios in downtown Manhattan.



What is the format of the 2024 NBA draft?



The draft will consist of 58 total picks over two rounds. The first round will feature picks 1-30, followed by picks 31-58 in the second round.



The top 14 selections of the first round were determined by a lottery involving teams that did not make this year's playoffs. The rest of the draft is done in order of win percentage.



Who has the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA draft?



The Atlanta Hawks won the draft lottery and secured the No. 1 overall pick. Atlanta owns the top pick for the fourth time in NBA history, and for the first time since the lottery began in 1985.

Who are some of the top prospects in the 2024 NBA Draft?



French forward Zaccharie Risacher is projected to be the first overall pick in ESPN's latest mock draft. The Hawks have also worked out Connecticut big man Donovan Clingan, Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard, NBA G League Ignite standout Matas Buzelis, Colorado forward Cody Williams and Ron Holland, a former consensus five-star prospect out of Dallas. French 7-footer Alex Sarr has also garnered interest at the top of the draft, while Bronny James, the son of NBA starLeBron James, has captured public attention as well.



When does NBA free agency begin?



NBA free agency begins at 6 p.m. ET on June 30. Teams can officially open negotiations with all free agents at that time. Teams are allowed to begin signing free agents at 12:01 p.m. ET on July 6.



How does NBA free agency work?



The new collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and its players goes into effect this offseason. Per the new CBA, all 30 teams now may begin negotiating exclusively with their own upcoming free agents immediately after the NBA Finals. Previously, teams were prohibited from those negotiations until the official start of the free agency period.



Who are some notable NBA free agents in 2024?



LeBron James (James has until June 29 to exercise his $51.4 million player option for next season.)



Paul George (George has until June 29 to exercise his $48.8 million player option for next season.)
