LEBANON, TN -- Jeremy Hill and his girlfriend Nicole Harris didn't know Nicole was pregnant.
It was quite a shock to Hill, then, when Harris came back from a trip to the bathroom early Wednesday morning holding their child.
"When I woke up, she had a baby in her arms," Hill told WKRN.
While Hill slept, Harris had gone into the bathroom because she wasn't feeling well. When she got there, Harris, who is already a mom, realized that she was having contractions. She was in labor with a child she didn't know she was expecting.
"I sat in the tub. I just (thought) that would be a safe spot and not on the floor," Harris told WKRN.
Harris then delivered her own baby, and she even cut the umbilical cord. It was only then that she went back to the bedroom to wake her boyfriend and call 911.
Harris went to the hospital to recover with her 6.5-lb son Jeremiah -- who was full-term. Both are doing well. Jeremiah is Harris and Hill's first baby together, though both are already parents.
Jeremiah was not expected because Harris did not notice any symptoms, the couple said. Hill said he had been suspecting Harris might be in the beginning stages of pregnancy, but was totally surprised to learn the truth.
"I was just thinking, 'We might have a long nine months ahead of us. You might be pregnant,'" he said. "And, boom. It was like, you don't have nine months. You have now."
Surprise births are not as rare as one might think. Last month a woman in Massachusetts gave birth to an unexpected 10-lb. baby girl.
