FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- All students have been released from a high school in Fremont after police put the school on lockdown this afternoon because of a report of a suspicious, possibly armed person.

Irvington High School was locked down following the report of a possible suspect at the campus at 41800 Blacow Road, police said shortly after 1 p.m.

Fully armed police officers swarmed the area on the ground and on the roof of the school in search of the suspicious person, but they never found the person.

The response came after a report that an armed man, an adult, may have gotten onto campus. He apparently was seen by a student, just before 1 p.m. and that prompted an immediate lockdown of this school and three others nearby.

While police looked for a possible suspect parents were texting and calling their kids.

A short time ago, Greg Bailey, a district administrator, made an announcement to parents.

"If your student drove a vehicle to school, they are being escorted to their cars right now," Bailey said. "They're not allowed to go to their lockers. They are allowed to go their cars and drive home."

Heather Ostdiek, a mother who was waiting for her teenager, said she was from the Denver area and had not heard from her son.

"I watched the whole Columbine shooting that happened and when I saw the kids with their hands on their heads here, I was like, I got to go," she said.

Students who normally get picked up from school were bused to the school district office, which is about two and a half miles from the campus.

Police will maintain a presence at the campus and do one last security check before classes resume Thursday.
