Cuddly friends flown in from SoCal ready for adoption in wake of Thomas Fire

MARIN, Calif. (KGO) -- The Marin Humane Society is helping shelters in Southern California inundated with animals from the Thomas Fire. More than 45 animals including cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs were flown to the Bay Area Wednesday.

Some lucky dogs enjoyed a first-class flight from Southern California as Marin Humane welcomed them from the Ventura County Animal Shelter.

"They're a little stressed," said Adoption Manager Catherine Tryon. "But for the most part they do really well. It's not a long flight."

Freeing up shelter space helps make room for animals displaced by the Thomas Fire.

"So it's really important to keep a lost animal in the county in which they were lost so that they're more likely to be reunited with their families," said Marin Humane Spokesperson Lisa Bloch.

A pilot with Wings of Rescue flew a load of dogs in Wednesday Morning.

"It's amazing that he does this on his own and just out of the kindness of his heart," said Bloch.

Cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs came in on a second flight.

Cute kittens that came in are almost perfect. They'll be microchipped, spayed and neutered, and caught up on their vaccinations. They'll be available in about a week.

Main Humane is happy to help its SoCal counterparts, considering they were in the same situation with the North Bay fires.

"We turned our shelter completely into an evacuation site for animals," said Bloch. "So we were housing about 350 pets of fire evacuees."
