CHP says officer witnesses shooting on Bay Bridge, all lanes reopen

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- All eastbound lanes on the Bay Bridge are now open following a CHP investigation into a shooting Friday morning.

Police says an off-duty CHP officer witnessed one car shooting at another on the eastbound side of the bridge and called it in.

There were no reports of any injuries in the shooting, just property damage.

The CHP says someone in a black sedan fired at a silver SUV. That SUV has been taken to the Oakland CHP office.

The off-duty officer says he tried to catch up to the sedan that fired but was unable to.

The CHP says this type of incident isn't normally something they deal with during the morning commute.

Authorities closed all the eastbound lanes to gather evidence, causing traffic backup in the area. The CHP says they realize the impact that closing the freeway had on commuters.

"Unfortunately, in events like this where somebody was almost killed or killed, we have to take measures to ensure that we do a professional job and get all the facts and make sure everything is done right," said CHP Sgt. Robert Powers. "That's why we have to shut down the freeway lanes, to get sort of a static environment where we can look at everything."

The eastbound lanes reopened by 9 a.m.

The CHP says the vehicle that was shot at is currently being processed and they're investigating whether the drivers knew each other.

As of now, they say they believe the targeted driver was just an innocent bystander.
