Friends, family, activists and Berkeley residents will be gathering this afternoon to celebrate the life and work of a councilwoman who recently died. Longtime Berkeley City Councilwoman Dona Spring died July 13 at the age of 55, according to City Manager Phil Kamlarz. The memorial service will be held between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Civic Center Park. Following the memorial service, a Celebration of Life will be held between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the North Berkeley Senior Center, located at 1901 Hearst Ave. Spring, who had been a member of the council since 1993, died of natural causes related to a long illness, city spokeswoman Mary Kay Clunies-Ross said. Spring represented Berkeley's downtown area and was known for being a strong advocate of tenants' rights and rights for the disabled.
