Police received a 911 call at 11:42 a.m. from someone who reported that a boy in a house at 1148 Regent St. was having trouble breathing, Scott said.

When firefighters arrived, the boy's father, Bashir Haidar, 47, allegedly asked them if they had a gun, police said.

Firefighters said they did not have a gun and Haidar allegedly told them he wanted to shoot his son and his wife, Smith said.

Firefighters found Haidar's son on the floor in the master bedroom struggling to breathe. He was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland.

Police have alleged that Haidar choked the child with his bare hands, but don't know why. Officers arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder and investigators were going to try to interview him this afternoon, Scott said.

Haidar and his son were the only people in the house at the time, Scott said.
