Employees arriving at the Planned Parenthood at 2211 Palm Ave. noticed the package outside the entrance and called police around 8:30 a.m., according to San Mateo police spokesman Lt. Mike Brunicardi.

Police called in the bomb squad, Brunicardi said, who immediately shut down a portion of Palm Avenue and made sure no other packages were on the property.

Officers took "all the necessary precautions" of evacuating the building and all the adjacent businesses, he said, before addressing the suspicious package. The bomb squad used a robotic device to neutralize and secure the package, he said.

Investigators are examining the contents of the package, but Brunicardi said it did not appear to be an explosive device. Palm Avenue was reopened at 11:20 a.m., he said.
