The crash happened at about 5:05 p.m. on Powell Street between Ellis and Market streets, according to Muni spokesman Judson True.

The accident is disrupting cable car service on the Powell Street portion of the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason cable car lines and bus shuttles are providing substitute service between Market and Washington streets.

Preliminary reports indicate both cable cars were stationary at the time of the crash.

Three Muni operators and the driver of the taxi reported injuries, but were not immediately taken to the hospital.
