7-year-old injured in bowling alley gang attack

WATSONVILLE, CA

Police say they have significant gang problem there but even they were surprised that gangs would take their fight to a bowling alley.

It happened around 9 p.m. Friday when police say two known gang members went into the bowling alley intent on attacking another gang member. They found the 20-year-old they were looking for there with his family. Police say they stabbed him but in the attack they also hurt a 7-year-old boy who was there with his family.

"The 7-year-old was an innocent bystander. He was in the pool hall portion of the bowling alley when the stabbing took place," said Sgt. Eric Taylor. "As the suspects were fleeing, one suspect fired one round back towards the victim of the stabbing and struck the 7-year-old in the abdomen."

Police had information that the men might be hiding in a house in Watsonville, so officers went there and found them. They also found a gun that matched the gun used at the bowling alley. They say one of the suspects was wanted for a parole violation.

They say they think the two men were the only ones involved and they do consider the case closed. The 7-year-old survived surgery but remained in the hospital Saturday night.
