Fire damages three homes in Berkeley Hills

BERKELEY, CA

The fire broke out around noon at a home near Avis and San Luis roads. Fire crews from three other cities were called in to help.

Witnesses say flames suddenly burst out of the house, leaping 40 feet in the air.

"Literally, all of a sudden, it just burst into flames," said witness Whitney Dafoe. "It was like an explosion. And there was glass breaking. It sounded like somebody was throwing stuff in the backyard. It was really intense."

Nearly 40 firefighters responded. No one was hurt, and a dog was rescued from the home that was destroyed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials say it does not appear to be suspicious.
