UC Berkeley may not be able to cut women's teams

BERKELEY, Calif.

The university voted to drop the women's lacrosse and gymnastics teams in an effort to balance its budget after deep funding cuts from the state. However, that threw Cal's athletic department out of compliance with the federal gender equality law known as Title IX.

Officials are said to be considering several options ranging from reinstating all sports to scrapping all sports.

A formal announcement is expected Thursday.
