DA, Mexican Consulate sign workplace agreement

SAN FRANCISCO

The memorandum of understanding strengthens the cooperation between both to protect Mexican workers from violent crime and workplace abuse, even if they are undocumented.

District Attorney George Gascon highlighted the case of a roofing contractor who was held responsible for the deadly fall of one of his workers.

"The defendant's workers were put in a position where they had to endanger themselves every day at work," said Gascon. "The victim and other workers were forced to work on the roof of a four-story building where a fall to the sidewalk was almost certainly fatal."

The contractor and his foreman were sentenced to one year in county jail for several workplace violations related to the 2008 death of a Mexican worker at a Twin Peaks apartment building.

The district attorney hopes the conviction will get other contractors to comply with safety laws.
