Puppy rescued from sidewalk crack

DALLAS

The four-week-old puppy slipped into the four-foot deep, four-inch wide crack that opened up in a Dallas-area backyard.

Workers arrived with shovels to dig the dog out. It took about 20 minutes to get the puppy out safely.

"We were just like 'Yes!'" said Fredricka Simon of Garland, Texas. "I looked at him (the animal shelter rescue worker) and I saw that he wanted to cry a little bit because they were like, 'Oh, he's safe.'"

The Dallas area broke a dubious record earlier in the week, reaching 70 days of triple-digit heat this year.
