Taiwanese, Chinese to walk Golden Gate Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO

In the Bay Area, some 700,000 Chinese- and Taiwanese-Americans are expected to commemorate the republic's centennial, according to Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco.

The republic in terms of land area is now mostly composed of Taiwan and was founded on Jan. 1, 1912 after revolutionaries overthrew China's last feudal monarchy on Oct. 10, 1911.

The celebration will begin with a flag raising ceremony at 10:10 a.m., which is significant, according to organizers, because Oct. 10 is known in the republic as Double Ten Day, the republic's national day.

A group walk across the bridge will follow from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
