Suspicious object at police station prompts evacuations

SAN FRANCISCO

Police said a resident had found the object in a pile of recycling material and brought it to the station around 11:55 a.m.

Officers deemed the item "suspicious" and placed it in the station's parking lot, police said.

The station is located at 17th and Valencia streets, and 17th street was shut down between Valencia and Albion streets.

Homes and businesses in the immediate area were evacuated, and residents of nearby streets were told to shelter in place, police said.

The bomb squad removed the suspicious object and brought it to a remote location to be "rendered safe," police said.

Around 1:15 p.m., the evacuation order was lifted and 17th Street reopened.
