The website, www.sanjoseca.gov, will display emergency alerts for major incidents in San Jose as well as ways for residents to subscribe to information about the emergencies.
A calendar of city-sponsored events and an enhanced customer service center are among the other new features of the website.
"Our new website reflects feedback from residents, businesses and other stakeholders who have asked for a San Jose website that's easier to use and easier to maintain," City Manager Debra Figone said in a statement.
The website includes a new web content management system that allows city staff to more easily manage the site.
City officials said there may be a few bugs as the website is unveiled and are asking people who encounter problems to send an email to webmaster.managersanjoseca.gov.
