1 killed in Texas train derailment

One person has died after a train derailed in El Paso, Texas, Monday night, the El Paso Fire Department said.

Two cars on the freight train derailed in a neighborhood in eastern El Paso, damaging a backyard shed, fence and gas meter, the fire department said. The gas was shut down and about 50 residents were evacuated as a precaution. They were allowed to return home at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Officials did not elaborate on the fatality and whether it was a person on the train or in the neighborhood.

There were no other injuries reported at this time, according to the fire department.

The fire department had said earlier in the evening that Texas Gas Service was on the way to the scene.

"Nearby homes are being evacuated as a safety precaution. Please avoid the area of Franklin and Barton as it is an active emergency scene. TXGas en route," the fire department tweeted.

The El Paso Police Department is handling the ongoing investigation.
