Women behind bars: before and after photos

More than 200,000 women in the U.S. are living behind bars; most are in prison for non-violent crimes, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, and serving far longer sentences than other industrialized nations.

ABC News is examining the often tragic circumstances that lead many of these women to spend the rest of their lives in prison. The photos on the left are what the women looked like before they were convicted; the photos on the right are what they look like after incarceration.
