CONCORD, Calif. (KGO) -- ABC7's 24th annual Give Where You Live Thanksgiving food drive is helping Bay Area food banks serve those in our community who aren't sure if they have enough food for themselves or their families.
ABC7 News Weather Anchor Spencer Christian was at Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano Counties in Concord on Wednesday with a look at just how critical this holiday campaign is.
In Concord, over 20 million pounds of food was distributed last year, more than half of which was fresh fruits and vegetables - that is enough for more than 16 million meals. And not only that, but this food bank serves one in eight residents every month.
On Wednesday, Benicia Valero refinery volunteers were among the groups who worked to help package produce for the food bank's Farm to Kids program, which delivers fresh produce to low-income students in after school programs.
On behalf of ABC7 and our parent company Disney, ABC7's Spencer Christian presented a check for $15,000 to the food bank's executive director Larry Sly. "This is very very necessary for us, we're feeding a lot of people in need. This is going to allow us to get 30,000 meals out to the people we serve," Sly said.
The Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano Counties serves at least 190,000 people each month.
