The move comes one day after Deborah Edgerly wrote a letter to the City Council, asking that her retirement be postponed. That retirement had been scheduled for later this month.
Mayor Dellums put Edgerly on paid leave on Friday.
Edgerly is accused of interfering with a police investigation involving her nephew, who is a suspected gang member.
