Scientists reconstruct prehistoric bird colors

Yale university researchers say they've discovered pigment molecules-- called melanin-- in 150-million- year-old squid and bird fossils.

They say it allows them for the first time to reconstruct some aspects of the color of pre-historic birds. They are now searching for fossil pigments that might reveal the true color of the many dinosaurs that were feathered.

The research is in the journal "Biology Letters."
