Police caught up with the suspect between the Tennyson and Jackson exits after they spotted a car wanted in relation to an earlier robbery of a peninsula U.S. Bank.
Elmer Alexis Reyes crashed into a sound wall and fled the scene on foot. Police located Reyes and arrested him shortly after the crash.
Some of the stolen cash spilled onto the roadway and the California Highway Patrol had to close all but one northbound lane for more than an hour while they retrieved the cash.
All lanes were reopened by 5 p.m.
