The accident happened at El Camino Real and 31st Avenue. That's a busy intersection where Hillsdale Mall is located.
A black Jetta filled with three teenagers crashed into a taxi on El Camino real in San Mateo around 6:15 on Monday morning. The smoke was still pouring out of the Jetta after firefighters put out the flames.
Officers say after the crash the Jetta's driver got out and ran.
"The driver of the Jetta was later found hiding behind one of the buildings. He was taken in to custody. The driver of the taxi cab was deceased on the scene," said San Mateo Police Department Captain Kevin Raffaelli.
Witnesses told police the Jetta was speeding on El Camino Real when it slammed into the yellow taxi cab.
Officers found two of the teens trapped inside the burning Jetta. A teenage girl was pulled out from the back seat.
"The individual that was in the front seat was trapped inside the vehicle. Two officers worked their way through the flames, grabbed that individual and forcibly pulled him out of the vehicle," said Captain Raffaelli.
All three of the teenagers were taken to Stanford Hospital. Two are in critical condition and suffered burns and broken bones.
The driver of the Jetta was arrested nearby and booked on hit and run and vehicular manslaughter charges.
