Belmont woman's shrine of Barack Obama

BELMONT, CA

There's pride of ownership along Mountain View Avenue in Belmont. You can see it in the neat lawns, the picket fences and where Carolyn Hoskins lives, in what has become a political and social statement.

"Well I always hoped things would happen, but I never thought I would see it happen," says Hoskins.

It's what happens when a perennial collector and decorator cuts loose with glee. The centerpiece of it all is what she calls a hope tree.

Hoskins has stories about every item.

"You could send a dollar contribution, but the Obama campaign would send a thank you note. It made you feel that even with a small amount, you were doing your share," says Hoskins.

As Carolyn tells visitors, the hope tree did not happen overnight. It began as soon as Barack Obama declared his candidacy. The collection grew, and soon, not even the tree could contain it all.

Carolyn already had a corner for Jerry Rice, another for Barry Bonds, and yet one more for her deceased husband, Bob Hoskins, who played for the 49ers. But in terms of square footage, Obama now rules the roost, along with Joe Biden, who's in the corner.

Carolyn has buttons, tee shirts, books, even Barack Obama water, for which she paid $1.59.

"I would have paid more than that for it," says Hoskins.

And if this seems like a bit much -- consider the source. Carolyn grew up watching the civil rights movement and she lectures on African American history. Her mother, Lucille Yarbrough, is from Illinois, just like Barack Obama.

"It will be a glorious day for me, that I have lived 87 years and will see a black man become the President of the United States of America," says Yarbrough.

"You feel pride, so much respect for the country to have put race aside and to have voted for this man for what he stands for," says Hoskins.

So it's safe to say that at Carolyn Hoskins' house, Barack Obama has taken over the living room, for good.

"He's staying. He's not going anywhere," says Hoskins.

Same for the tree.

"I expect the tree to be there a while and I expect Barack Obama will be there for a while," says Yarbrough.
