Friday would have been the 25th birthday of Oscar Grant -- the man who was shot to death by a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer on New Year's Day.

Many of Grant's family and friends marched peacefully from the Hayward BART Station to a rally at Hayward's City Hall late Friday afternoon. Grant lived in Hayward.

"It's not about what your view is or what your political view is, we are out here to be a solidarity for Oscar Grant and his family," said a protester.

Organizers called for the public to boycott BART this weekend as a way to remember Grant. Others in the crowd repeated the demand for BART to disband its police department. The former officer who shot Grant, Johannes Mehserle, faces murder charges.
