Hundreds of East Bay third graders had heavier backpacks on their way home from school on Tuesday. That's because they were filled with brand new books.

Volunteers with the Rotary Club of Oakland started handing them out Tuesday.

The goal is to give at least three books to every single third grader in Oakland and Emeryville -- that's more than 14,000 books -- all by the end of the week.

Among the books being distributed are "Charlotte's Web," "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" and "Horrible Harry Moves Up to the Third Grade."

The books were paid for thanks to $45,000 in donations.
