The Morongo band of Mission Indians of Palm Springs Tuesday donated $10,000 to the families of each officer. They presented the checks to the Oakland Police Officers Association.

"Someone asked me the other day, 'why would a tribe from 500 miles away would so this,' because it's the right thing to do," Morongo Tribal Council member Dennis Miller said.

Attorney General Jerry Brown was also on hand and hopes the donation will inspire others to give as well.
