CSU Chancellor Charles Reed said Tuesday the fee increase was necessary to address CSU's budget deficit and maintain academic quality at the 23-campus system.

Under the proposal, annual fees would rise to $3,354 for undergraduates and $4,134 for graduate students at the 23-campus system.

CSU officials say the fee increase would be offset by expanded financial aid for students.

The move is the latest measure to address CSU's budget troubles. CSU has recently frozen administrator salaries, restricted employee travel, implemented hiring freezes and reduced student enrollment.
