A CHP patrol unit began pursuing a blue Yamaha GSXR motorcycle near Madden and Capitol avenues just before 2 a.m., CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said, when the driver reportedly fled from officers onto Capitol Avenue at high speed.

The victim was pursued until he lost control of his motorcycle on an approach to Interstate Highway 680, Caggiano said.

The motorcycle left the roadway on Hostetter Road and crashed into a water meter, killing its driver.
