One JCC member says he was personally more alert, although he says he's always vigilant, in light of threats against Jewish people worldwide.

"We have holidays, Rosh Hashannah, Yom Kippur, where we're in the synagogue, there are many times where I'm sitting in the synagogue and I think, 'OK, who's going to come in and maybe do something,'" Martin Marcus said.

Police beefed up patrols around San Francisco's Holocaust memorial at the Legion of Honor. Although there has been vandalism at the site in the past, there were no threats of violence or vandalism associated with Wednesday's shooting in Washington.

The Contemporary Jewish Museum in downtown San Francisco was closed Wednesday, but there will be tighter security when it opens tomorrow, just to be safe.
