Cutbacks in funding from the state have contributed to the budget shortfall, and about 70 percent of the court's expenses are employee salaries, wages and benefits, according to Court Executive Officer John Fitton.

"We value every one of our colleagues and to lose any is painful for our entire organization," Fitton said in a prepared statement. "When we have regained a strong budget foundation we hope to rehire as many as we can."

In addition to the expected layoffs, the court has also left nearly 10 percent of all authorized positions unfilled, Fitton said.

The court additionally will close the third Wednesday of each month beginning Sept. 16 through June 2010.
