Sausalito startup /*Altarock*/ energy began drilling earlier this year near The Geysers.
It was supposed to be the Obama administration's first major test of a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuels but the drilling equipment has been unable to penetrate the rock below the surface.
The project is now suspended and it is unclear what Altarock will do next.
The project has also encountered scheduling delays and neighbors who believe the drilling can trigger small earthquakes.
