The span was expected to be completed by 2013 and now it may be completed by 2014. There will be an official announcement next month on the opening date.

The delay will not affect the motorists who drive over the Bay Bridge, they will still have the old span to cross, but the new span won't be opened as early as expected.

The welding for the span is going on in Shanghai, China for the huge steel portions of the new steel suspension bridge. The problem is there are cracks in the welds.

The design of the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge is going on in Vancouver, Canada. New staff have been employed to help push that plan along.

Because of the delay and other expenses, the new span's budget could increase by hundreds of millions of dollars.
