Police received word at about 2:15 p.m. that a man had been hit on the tracks near Depot Road, Lt. Chris Orrey said.
Officers arrived at the tracks to find the victim had died, she said.
Hayward police "held down the scene" until officials from Union Pacific could arrive, Orrey said. A spokesman for the railroad could not be reached this afternoon for further details.
