A new study shows women who took birth control pills live longer than those who don't.

British researchers followed 46,000 women for four decades, beginning in 1968.

They found the pill cut women's risk of dying from bowel cancer by 38 percent, and other diseases by 12 percent.

Doctors aren't sure why, but the pill contains synthetic hormones to suppress ovulation, which may play a role somehow.

The study is in the British Medical Journal.
