NUMMI suppliers still waiting for word on money

SAN FRANCISCO

Severance checks, averaging $54,000, were expected to be sent to union members this week, but hundreds of others laid off from firms that supplied NUMMI are still waiting to find out whether they are eligible for government assistance.

Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Calif., Thursday sent a letter to Labor Secretary Hilda Solis denouncing the six week delay and saying, "It is unacceptable that the administration would allow red tape to prevent this much needed help."
