The nurses plan to walk off the job at five UC hospitals including UCSF on Thursday. Another 12,000 nurses from the same union in Minnesota are also planning a Thursday walkout.
The nurses union says they are striking over inadequate staffing levels and patient care.
On Tuesday, the California Public Employment Relations Board plans to go to court to ask for a temporary restraining order preventing the strike.
