CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Mother and son working together. But police charge they were up to no good. According to authorities in Salem, New Hampshire, the mother-and-son team stole more than $1,600 worth of video games from a Best Buy. Police say 64-year-old Luise LaQuerre and her 20-year-old son, Christopher Andrukaitis are charged with felony theft. Store security officers say they spotted the son stuffing video games into a cloth bag carried by mom. Police add the duo had more video games in their car.
BABY BONG KEYSTONE
HEIGHTS, Fla. (AP) - A young Florida mom says she thought a picture of her baby
with a bong would be funny. But authorities aren't laughing. Nineteen-year-old
Rachel Stieringer is now charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, after
posting the baby bong picture on her Facebook page. Clay County Sheriff's
deputies say Stieringer turned herself in July 29. A spokesman for the
Department of Children and Families says the baby had no injuries. And this week
the drug tests came back negative. Stieringer has been released on about $500
bond.
HUNGRY BURGLAR
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - It was a shrimp pizza for breakfast. And a trip to the
slammer in time for lunch. Police in Greensboro, North Carolina charge
22-year-old Bradley Michael broke into a Red Lobster one morning earlier this
week. The manager says the place was trashed, including 30-grand worth of
computers, furniture and liquor bottles. The manager says the hungry crook also
made himself a shrimp pizza and ate some cake. Officers found Michael inside the
restaurant. He's now charged with breaking and entering, vandalism and larceny.
Michael was being held on $50,000 bond.
STOLEN ASTRONAUT SUIT
HOUSTON (AP) - It's a far-out theft. A former NASA contract employee has pleaded
guilty to stealing a space flight suit with historic significance. Federal
prosecutors say Calvin Smith took the flight suit worn by America's first female
astronaut, Sally Ride. It even has Ride's name patch on it. Smith is also
charged with stealing machine parts. His estranged wife contacted authorities
after finding the items in a suitcase. Smith faces up ten years in prison, when
he's due to be sentenced in November.
PRESCRIPTION VEGETABLES
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Eat your veggies -- doctors' order. Docs are writing
prescriptions for fruits and vegetables in an effort fight fat. Health care
providers are offering vouchers worth a buck a day to low-income families in
Massachusetts and Maine. The chits can be used by participating families at
farmers markets. The program will measure how the fresh produce impacts health
indicators like blood pressure, weight and weight gain during pregnancy.
POLICE DOG-BULLETPROOF VEST
BOSTON (AP) - Marco, the K-9 cop, now has a doggie bulletproof vest. And a
13-year-old Massachusetts girl is being thanked. Eighth-grader Anna Barowsky
struggled for months to raise the $750 to buy the vest. MBTA Transit Police
Chief Paul MacMillan says Anna made dog-shaped biscuits, doggie earrings out of
clay, homemade whole wheat dog biscuits and even had a lemonade stand. Anna is
to get a "Certificate of Appreciation" at a special ceremony this morning at
transit police headquarters in Boston.
