The suspect talked to the clerk, walked around and left the store, only to come back and demand money. But after the clerk handed over the cash, police say the man shot him anyway, at point-blank range in the chest.
The 32-year-old clerk died at the scene.
The gunman is suspected in another robbery on Monday.
This is Watsonville's first homicide of the year.
