AT&T is introducing wifi access in public spaces for its subscribers in San Francisco and expanding it for its customers in New York.

The phone company is providing its first "hot zones" along the embarcadero in San Francisco.

It is expanding wifi hot spots in New York's Times Square just in time for the New Year's Eve countdown.

AT&T says it is trying to improve coverage where large numbers of people gather together.

The service is free for smart phone and broadband customers.
