UC research: LED lights contain toxic chemicals

but researchers in at two California universities report LED light bulbs sold for holiday displays contain high levels of some potentially harmful substances.

LED stands for "light emitting diodes," and they use less power than traditional light bulbs. But they can contain lead, arsenic, nickel and 12 other possibly dangerous chemicals.

Researchers at UC Davis and UC Irvine point out the bulbs only pose a danger if one breaks.
