UC Berkeley reports spike in Peeping Tom incidents

BERKELEY, Calif.

Police have received six reports of peeping from dorm residents since January. The most recent happened last week while a woman was showering in a restroom of one of the residence halls. She says she saw a man peeking over the partition but he fled after she screamed. The suspect in that case is described only as having black spiky hair. Police say that fits the description in at least one other case.

Less than one hour after last week's incident, another woman was taking a shower in a different dorm when a floormate saw a man peeking over the shower partition. Police were notified and a man unaffiliated with the university was arrested.

Campus police describe the incidents as "deviant and criminal" acts that are concerning.

In response, UC Berkeley facilities managers have decided make bathroom partitions taller. But they are also asking students to be vigilant and to be sure to close doors when using the restrooms or showers.
