Apple is expected to announce the release of the highly anticipated iPhone 5 on October 4.

Tech blog All Things Digital is reporting that Tim Cook, the company's new CEO, will hold a major media event that day and sources say it will center on the next generation iPhone. This will be Cook's first major product rollout as CEO.

There is no word on whether Steve Jobs, who resigned as CEO in August, will be at the event.

Apple's stock has soared in recent days, hitting $422.86 before closing at $413.45 on Tuesday.

Apple will not comment on the report.
