California's school superintendent is encouraging everyone in the state to observe Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution today.

The civil rights advocate died in 2005 at the age of 86. Korematsu was arrested after refusing to go to a U.S. internment camp along with thousands of other Japanese-Americans during World War II. The Oakland native filed a lawsuit and the Supreme Court eventually overturned his conviction decades later. President Clinton awarded him the presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.
