Which cars are better if you buy them new?

A new study by Kelley Blue Book says newer fuel-efficient cars burn less gas than the older models. The money you save on the purchase price for a used car could be quickly eaten up by today's high gas prices.

For example, a new Subaru Impreza gets 30 miles per gallon; the older model gets only 22 miles per gallon. A new Honda Civic Hybrid gets 44 miles per gallon, but the older version gets just 41.

Not all are improved though. The new Hyundai Elantra gets the same 33 miles per gallon as the older version, but it only costs $546 more to get a brand new, rather than a year-old model.
