Corey Abrams is in the intensive care unit at the Kaiser in Oakland. He underwent a six-and-a-half hour disc fusion surgery to repair his broken neck this past Wednesday. His injuries stem from a crash that happened when his mother, Jasmine Glenn, stopped on the freeway because of an illegal sideshow.
The family car was rear-ended by a big rig. Glenn was driving her black Impala while her son and mother, Terri Patton, were in the back seat. They were driving on I-880 in the southbound direction in San Leandro on March 20 when someone started doing donuts on the freeway. Glenn saw the sideshow in front of her and came to a complete stop, but the big rig did not.
"Last thing I remember saying is, 'look at the guy doing the donuts.' Then I woke up in the hospital," Patton said.
"After the big rig hit us, we spinned out of control and then we ended up hitting another car. And after we stopped, we were facing on-coming traffic," Glenn said.
Corey was the most seriously hurt and rushed to Kaiser in Hayward because he was unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. Glenn said doctors there took head and neck scans and found nothing wrong with Corey, but he couldn't straighten his head. Glenn took him to Kaiser in Oakland where doctors performed major surgery on Wednesday.
"I hold responsible with the person that was doing the sideshow because one, why would you do a sideshow on the freeway? If you want to put your life in danger, do it somewhere else," Glenn said.
This wasn't the first sideshow to take place on I-880. In January, several cars were involved in a sideshow in the middle of I-880 near the Oakland Coliseum.
"I encourage parents who have young kids driving to let them know this type of behavior is totally unacceptable," said Michael Wallace, a pastor at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Doctors say Corey will have to stay at the hospital until he is able to walk on his own and will have to wear a brace for three months.
The big rig driver has not been cited. Police also have no leads on the driver involved in the sideshow.
