Father of missing Oakland toddler questioned by police; AMBER Alert remains in effect

OAKLAND, Calif.

The father of the child is being questioned by police this morning.

Twenty-one-month-old Daphne Viola Webb was reported missing by her father shortly after 11 a.m. yesterday. John Webb told police he left his daughter in his SUV when he went into a store on International Boulevard. Webb says when he came out, she was not there. His 87-year old mother was in the vehicle, but she suffers from dementia and could not help.

Police say they are looking for a woman who was seen walking with a baby that fit Daphne's description. Investigators are also checking if the father actually took the baby to the store. Police are interviewing Webb, but say he is not a suspect.<

Wednesday night the FBI roped off the apartment where Webb and his daughter live with his mother. Police have also been searching an area along Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline Park in Oakland. Authorities had dogs sniffing along a trail there and the area has been taped off as a crime scene. /p>

Daphne is described as black, with short, curly black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing orange two-piece pajamas with pink hearts, and pink socks.

Anyone with information on the girl's whereabouts is asked to call the Oakland Police Department Missing Persons Unit: (510) 238-3352 or 911.
