Anthropologist turns life over to Twitter for a day

SAN FRANCISCO

Grant McCracken recently published a book on social experiments so he decided to become one. He spent Tuesday doing whatever people on Twitter told him to do, conducting interviews at every stop.

He was asked to go to City Lights Books and buy a copy of Howl, the iconic poem written by Allen Ginsberg, give gelato to a stranger, start a cult and plank on the fountain at Justin Herman Plaza.

McCracken said the extraordinary variety of outcomes, events and people gave him a small portrait of life in San Francisco.
