Before capturing the photos, James York had a seven-minute encounter with the animal.
York says his friend was taking pictures of the elk at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park when it approached him.
The animal began nuzzling him, before then forcefully nudging his antlers into York's head.
The photographer says he treasures the images and jokes his "hard head" came in handy that day.
